the collective
skating for a revolution
ImillaSkate, a Bolivian skater group founded in 2019 by three girls in Cochabamba, is unlike anything the skateboarding community has encountered. This all-female collective skates in indigenous clothing – bright multi-layered polleras (skirts), Sombrero Valluno (hats), and typically with their hair in braids. Historically, to prevent discrimination and social exclusion, Indigenous women adopted Western clothing to show their assimilation into Spanish colonial society. But Imillaskate is part of a genealogy striving to reclaim and celebrate its ancestral roots. Not only have its members become exceptional skateboarders, they’ve also grown into icons of resistance and powerful advocates for the empowerment of women and girls.

“I like to skate because it makes me feel free and reminds me that i can overcome anything. it fills my heart. it’s a moment of mental and emotional peace..”
